Collection: Roots & Rhythm: A Love Letter in Fabric
The Roots & Rhythm collection is a celebration of origin and evolution—a soulful expression of culture, memory, and design that brings love and joy into the home. Each pillow in this collection tells a story through texture, pattern, and palette. “Roots” speaks to the deep ancestral heritage woven into every thread—the histories, customs, and textile traditions of West Africa. “Rhythm” represents the heartbeat of the diaspora—the vibrant motion, bold prints, and modern design sensibilities that echo how we live, move, and create today.
This collection is more than beautiful decor; it’s a love letter to legacy.
In the world of interior design, African-inspired elements are often flattened into generic categories like “Global,” “Bohemian,” or “Worldly.” These terms, though popular, rarely honor the specific people, regions, or traditions from which these designs originate. Roots & Rhythm challenges that narrative. This collection—originally titled East Meets West: An African-American Décor Love Story—was born from a desire to acknowledge and elevate the authentic cultural contributions of West African artistry and the African-American experience.
The spark was lit in the summer of 2023, when my dear friend Kandice traveled to Accra, Ghana. I asked her to bring back locally sourced fabrics—true treasures of Ghanaian craftsmanship. She returned with vibrant wax prints, intricate textures, and stunning patterns that carried the soul of the country. For months, I lived with these fabrics, touching them, dreaming with them, waiting for the right vision. It came during a design project when I couldn’t find West African pillows that felt rooted and refined. That moment became the genesis of this collection.
Each pillow is handcrafted using a curated blend of African wax prints (also known as Ankara or Dutch Wax Prints) and modern Western textiles—paired with denim, faux leather, ribbed cotton, and linen-like neutrals. These pillows bridge two continents and countless experiences. They are deeply personal, proudly cultural, and unapologetically modern.
As the daughter of a Sierra Leonean father and an African-American mother, I was raised at the intersection of two worlds—both rich, resilient, and beautiful. This collection is a reflection of that collision and coexistence. It is my offering to the people who feel split between places, yet whole in their expression. To those who long for connection to the Motherland, even from afar. To those who honor their heritage through the way they live, gather, and decorate their homes.
It is with love and reverence that I welcome you into Roots & Rhythm: A Love Letter in Fabric. May each piece in this collection help you create a home that tells your story, reflects your journey, and feels like a sanctuary for all that you are becoming.
